Dubai Loop Construction Begins: Elon Musk’s Tesla Tunnels Go Underground
Dubai Loop construction has officially moved from blueprint to execution, marking a historic milestone for urban transport in the Middle East. Developed by Elon Musk’s The Boring Company (TBC) in a definitive partnership with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the high-speed subterranean network has entered its foundation-laying stage. Groundwork gained rapid momentum as factories-initiated production on the vast lining material. Phase 1 of the tunnel system alone requires 25,000 reinforced precast concrete segments weighing a combined 45,000 tons (100 million pounds).
Project
Overview & Phase 1 Specifications
The
underground network aims to bypass surface gridlock entirely, utilizing
automated, climate-resilient electric vehicles to ferry passengers through
single-direction tunnels measuring 3.6 meters in diameter.
- Phase 1 Cost: Dh565 Million ($153.85
Million)
- Phase 1 Distance: 6.4 kilometers
- Target Timeline: System scheduled to open
to the public within two years
- Full Network Vision: Expansion to a
22-kilometer network featuring 19 stations, budgeted at approximately Dh2
billion.
Slashing
Commute Times: DIFC to Dubai Mall
The primary
objective of the initial launch corridor is to resolve heavy urban bottleneck
points between major financial and retail hubs. Once Phase 1 is operational, a
standard commute between the Dubai International Financial Centre
(DIFC) and Dubai Mall will be slashed from a 20-minute surface drive to just
three minutes.
Passengers
will pre-book direct, point-to-point journeys without intermediate stops,
keeping transit rapid and seamless. The initial phase is designed to
accommodate over 13,000 passengers daily, with capacity scaling up
to 30,000 once the entire 22km spine connecting Dubai World Trade Centre and
Business Bay is completed.
Initial
Phase 1 Stations
The RTA
confirmed the first four primary transit terminals will be integrated into the
following locations:
- DIFC 2
- ICD Brookfield Place
- Burj Khalifa
- Zabeel Dubai Mall Parking
