Turkey Detains 1,400+ Protesters and Journalists Amid Opposition Crackdown

Turkey has detained over 1,400 protesters and multiple journalists in a crackdown on opposition following the jailing of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. The protesters were demonstrating against Imamoglu's arrest, which his supporters claim is a politically motivated move by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government.

The police used force to disperse the protesters, with reports of pepper spray, tear gas, and rubber bullets being used . Several journalists were also attacked and detained while covering the protests, including AFP photojournalist Yasin Akgül and Reuters correspondent Dilara Şenkaya .

The International Press Institute (IPI) has condemned the Turkish government's actions, calling for an immediate end to the policy of obstructing journalists' work and restricting public access to information . Human rights groups have also criticized the government's response, with Amnesty International demanding an immediate halt to police violence .
